Dale Carnegie Quotes And Life Story

[ad_1]

The heart of Dale Carnegie’s philosophy was the belief that it was possible to change other people’s behavior.  This can be done, he said, by changing your own behavior and attitude toward them.   At the heart of this approach was treating others with respect.

He preached that one should never criticize, complain about, or condemn another.  Only show appreciation of their talents and achievements.  In this way, you will motivate that person.

Dale Carnegie was born in 1888 and died in 1955.  From a young age, he showed interest in debating and public speaking.  He went on to teach public speaking and then establish the Dale Carnegie Institute.  The Institute is dedicated to personal improvement courses.

Carnegie’s success as a teacher of public speaking and his views on motivating people led him to publish his best-known book How to Win Friends and Influence People.  He is considered to be the first successful proponent of motivational and inspirational speaking.  Today his books are still popular, and many modern motivational speakers use his approach to public speaking.

Dale Carnegie often took as his theme the need to praise people rather than criticize them.  He felt that a person is more likely to perform better when praised.  Criticism is negative and will provoke a negative response from the other person.  He cited leaders like Abraham Lincoln as good examples of using praise to get results.

He urged leaders and those in authority to show self-control when dealing with difficult situations, and try to understand why a person has acted in the way he did.  Forgiving a mistake is, he thought, a better approach than reprimanding them.

Carnegie promoted certain qualities as essential for success in dealing with people.  These qualities include avoiding arguments, listen to others, be happy and positive, talk about the other person and not yourself, and show the other person that you believe them to be important.

The responsibility for bringing another person around to your way of thinking, lies, according to Carnegie, firmly with you.  You must make all the effort if you wish to change someone else’s attitude.   Begin by being friendly, and then do not antagonize them by criticizing them or being negative.  If you say something wrong or misplaced, apologize.

Make the other person believe that you think like them, and then listen to what they have to say.  Gradually you will be able to introduce your ideas which now stand a good chance of being accepted by the other person.

Dale Carnegie’s philosophy is rooted in common sense and simplicity.  Even though his ideas were formulated a century ago, they still have relevance in today’s society.  The importance of communicating effectively and motivating people remains the same now as it was then.  In the digital age that we now inhabit, the skills needed to gain the trust of others and to be able to influence people are essential.
