Insurance policies under Tax Planning Considerations in Respect of Salary Income – Income Tax

Insurance policies under Tax Planning Considerations in Respect of Salary Income :

Any payment made by an employer on behalf of an employee to maintain a life policy will be treated as perquisite in the hands of the employee. Further, payments received from the employer in respect of Keyman Insurance policies constitute income in the hands of the employees. However, the payment of premium by the employer on behalf of the employee will not be treated as a perquisite in the case of accident insurance policies. This is due to the fact that the employer has a vested interest in the safety of the life of his employee who is engaged in such dangerous occupations. Further, any sum paid by the employer in respect of any mediclaim premium paid by the employee to keep in force an insurance on his health or the health of any member of his family under any scheme approved by the Central Government for the purpose of section 80D is not a perquisite in the hands of the employee.
